clio 182 faster than cup 197 around top gear track

Ja
HanroR26

That's impressive

nippy car then...
I had a run with a guy in PTA once before...   kept up all the way even when they were 2 up...

awesome
jaxx182

Ja I think they quite even in terms of power to weight.

Clio 197: 145kW & 1240kg's
Clio 182: 132kW & 1090kg's

BUT the 197 has better suspension & brakes as standard so it's surprising that it was slower. The track conditions may gave been worse (gotta defend the 197 for you guys   )
J's RS

it is OK... feels like a bigger car... oh, it is...
there are alot of things that count for a 197... so a slow lap doenst concern me so much as to defend it...
rudolfm

What was the lap times? Were did you get this info?
carlo_sg

Where's the proof...?
Link to an article/video?

I posted a video of the 200 beating the 182 around a short track by 1.15seconds, in terms of lap times, that is huge!

200 cup 44.12seconds
182 cup 45.27seconds

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VUR3_xK_mdU

The 197 Cup is not that much different from the 200 Cup. The 200 has 10% increase in torsional rigidity. So I dont see the 197 cup being that much slower.
rudolfm

Exactly carlo! Thats why i asked...? Just cant type that much on my cellphone...
J's RS

let it go...
really, as we all know, anything can happen on the road... besides...
"the next model should and would most like be better than the one before..." that is how it works... circle of life... so the 197 had a bad day...
jaxx182

Don't know about the 197 around the Top Gear track but here are 2 links where the 182 beats the Clio 200 on the Top Gear Track. (both driven by The Stig)

Interestingly, the Ford Focus and VW Golf are faster than both Clio's on this track.

I've raced against both at killarney, and I'm faster than the ST.
and the Golf5 Gti is no contest!

My brother-in-law has a SAC conversion on his Gti5 and Eibach springs, and I was way faster! Even on the straights he wasnt pulling away.

But the numbers there show the 182 being faster, so respect!

Anyone with a 182 want to take me on this Sunday at Killarney's Streetcar trackday?!

I dont take to heart what those clowns say!

Hmmmm

I conceed that its in black and white so props to the 182, but does anyone know the track conditions for each test ?

I've seen the vid of the 182's lap and it was a dry as the a nomads toe nail..
Also not much point in saying both laps were done by the stig, when we all know chances are it was 2 completely different drivers (especially after 4 years).

also a serious question,
Does anyone know if the top gear track has changed at all over the years, I watched some of the old episodes and the lay out track doesn't look the same to me...
Or am I just seeing things   (quite possible)
J's RS

believe the track has some changes here and there
or we are both just see'ing things

Agreed Bats, it's all relative at the end of the day.

It's just nice to stir a bit
Bats_197

Would be nice to see them run against eachother or at lest time on the same day

Besides, I was faster than all the 182's around Midvaal so I'm happy     <-- Now thats how you stir
jaxx182

Ja, I saw you flying 'round the track that day. But that must be due to your superior driving skills

(Pity Brad & I were in a different group so we couldn't chase you!   )
J's RS

bats... driving skills... one sentence?

Maybe he meant drivings kills ???
J's RS

i was just pointing out gear slips... now kills>?
glad you are OK after the Mazda incedent bud!

how many 182's are in the Edenvale area?
Bglossop

Hey Jaxx!! Backup has arrived!!!

It's always good to see figures that favour your own car, but the circle of life still holds true... There has to be some sort of improvement on e newer model.
But I still feel the 182 is the Meat and Bones of the Clio lineup!

Man that Midvall was a Fun Day!!!
robin

Sorry Guys
Did not mean to put RS owners against RS owners...as Jaxx said, it's just physics, power to weight ratio. both the above cars were driven by stig in the dry. Check out the Clio V6....about 3 seconds slower than the above although on a very wet track. The 197 is about 200 kgs heavier and 20 cm's longer than clio II but I would much rather have an accident in a 197. Read a test between the original Cooper S and the current one and the original comes out tops but the 1st crumple zone on the original is your nose.

Welll I think they are both awesome cars and it really comes down to the driver! Fastest lap of the day at midvall in a clio was the R27 if Iam not mistaken?

But i would love the power to weight of the 182 but the brakes and safety of the 197 that would be unbeatable.

This is from my limited knowledge of track driving!!!!

Thats easy.
182 = "132kw"/1090kg = 121kw/tonne
197 = "145kw"/1240kg = 117kw/tonne

to make the 197 even to the 182, the 197 needs and extra 5kw, easily acheived with a remap.

"150kw"/1240 = 121kw/tonne

* power in "...", cos in both cases the claimed power is higher than reality.
Koinit

The 182 I believe would be quicker on a power circuit because its lighter, more power to weight than the others, even on the vid that Carlo posted the 182 was quicker to the first corner, on a twisty circuit the 200 with its better brakes and chasis would win but in the hands of an expert crazy driver like the Stig 182 would be quicker. I drove the 197 and it feels so much safer than the 182 at the crazy speeds. I think if you are completely nuts and have no concerns for safety the 182 would win, but that's not me I prefer to be safe
